Book publication: Youth in the Media City

Lauttasaari Manor (Otavantie 10, Kone Foundation)

Digital Youth in the Media City research project publishes the digital book “Youth in the Media City – Belonging and Control on the Move”. The digital book gives a street level view into urban youth subcultures in Helsinki and Saint Petersburg. The digital book is a collection of the project’s researchers’ essays on their research: fieldwork in the metro, encounters in an urban circus, active player communities of Pokémon Go, the redefinition of the city by sticker artists and debating gender in graffiti subculture. The publication is an experimental way of bringing research topics to a broader audience through popular writing and art. Photographer Patrik Rastenberger’s photos visualize the research phenomena and sound art by artist Taina Riikonen take the reader into underground soundscapes.
